From click to GA4: responsibilities in the installation journey

Organize the acquisition journey into stages, identify available signals, and preserve accountability for each system.

A click, an app store visit, installation and first open are different stages. A useful measurement design identifies what each system can observe and how the records are related.

Start with the source signal

A campaign can carry parameters and identifiers. It is necessary to check which ones reach the next point of the journey, in what format and under what conditions. A configured link does not alone prove that a subsequent installation has been identified.

In the installation step, record the platform, distribution method and attribution mechanism. When the app opens, the instrumentation starts observing events in the app. In the installation architecture described by Bridgee, Firebase and GA4 remain responsible for this internal journey.

Write a simple contract

For each step, define event, source, time, allowed correlation identifier, deduplication rule, and owner. Include an explicit definition of result with no identified source and another for technical failure. These situations require different operational responses.

A validation table can record the scenario, the expected, the observed and the explanation. The goal is to allow someone else to replicate the journey and recognize the same conclusion.

Preserve the boundary between steps

Sending information to analytics does not prove that the origin was recognized correctly. Likewise, observing the first use does not demonstrate that the entire previous campaign was visible.

To start with the implementation, see the Installs + GA4 guide. To understand the definitions before comparing reports, read download and first_open.
